Heavy foils / anti-drumming layers

Heavy layers are highly suitable for insulating and attenuating the noise emitted by metal sheets and parts, or entire metal structures. As the heavy layer dampens vibrations and drumming, it prevents the propagation of sound waves and reduces noise emissions. Heavy layers are also used in vehicles, for soundproofing enclosures and covers and as well as for doors, windows, roller shutter boxes and stairs – to implement high-quality noise-control measures that are certain to achieve the desired noise reduction effect. Thanks to their low thickness, anti-drumming heavy layers are a perfect solution for applications where only little space is available. They are easy to cut to the required size and shape.
soni 491 STL
Our soni 491/STL noise-control panel is a highly effective sound-insulation product based on PUR foam, equipped with a micro-perforated surface film and additionally with a heavy layer. This clever combination of two different acoustic materials ensures both sound-insulating and sound-absorbing properties in one product. soni 491 STL is suitable, for example, for boosting the sound insulation effectivity of a wall, partition wall or ceiling. Advice on building a curtain wall: For a curtain wall, dowel wooden laths of 30 or 50 mm thickness to the wall. Ideally, an elastic layer is placed between the wall and the laths to prevent sound bridges. Our soni NBR sealing tape is the ideal solution for such an elastic mounting. Then insert our sound-absorber product soni 491 STL in the empty spaces between the laths and cover them with plaster boards or particle boards screwed to the laths. To optimize the curtain wall you can "decouple" the plaster board / particle board from the floor and ceiling as well as the adjacent walls by filling the edge joints with acrylic. For an example of a curtain wall construction for noise insulation purposes, please see the testimonial "Neighbors / Curtain Walling”.  If you do not have the tools and/or the time to cover the sound-insulation panels with plasterboard or chipboard, we recommend our soni COMPOSITE as an alternative sound-insulation material. In contrast to soni 491 STL, soni COMPOSITE scores with a stylish decorative felt surface that is available in different colors and excellent for visible sound-conditioning materials.

soni SB 700
Our soni SB 700 sound-insulation panel is a two-layer product consisting of a highly sound-absorbing, hydrophobic polyester non-woven and a synthetic heavy layer (soni EVA 6-01). This newly developed combination has both sound-absorbing and sound-insulating capacity with especially high effectiveness in the frequency range of compressors. This makes it the optimum solution for substantially reducing the noise pollution caused by the compressors typically used in heat pumps or air-conditioning systems. In a few simple steps you can build a DIY compressor jacket from our soni SB 700 noise control panels. All you need to do is to measure the compressor’s dimensions and cut corresponding parts from the soni SB 700 acoustic panel with a carpet knife. Then fit the pieces like a shell around the compressor and seal the joints with soni VLC adhesive tape.  Our assembly instructions illustrate the three easy steps to building a compressor shell.

Applications for heavy layers

Heavy / sound-deadening layers deliver the double effect of air-borne noise insulation and solid-borne noise attenuation. Especially in areas where metal sheets or other materials tend to vibrate, the heavy layer does an excellent job. When glued onto the material, the heavy layer increases the mass or weight per area unit to an extent that usually leads to a rise in the so-called resonance frequency of the material. As a result, the unpleasant and often botheringly loud droning noise disappears. For this reason, heavy layers are mainly used as anti-drumming measure, which is why they are also called anti-drumming layers.

soni COMPOSITE combines the synthetic heavy layer soni EVA 3-01 with a robust PUR ether acoustic foam. The surface is covered with a non-woven that is available in 3 different colors. This ideal combination ensures a twofold noise-control effect: sound absorption plus sound insulation – for especially high overall effectiveness.
